December 29th, 2009

I have been playing for a couple of years now, and I still have never managed to get any of my toons over 30 until now. I actually just went through and deleted a bunch that I haven't touched in over a year and weren't very attached to. I am 50% altoholic and 50% ... bored. I guess.

I am impressed that I've leveled Ivalisse, my Belfy Hunter to nearly 40. I think that I am going to stick with her as my main and still be somewhat of an altoholic... as long as I promise myself not to neglect her.

I'm too much of a solo player. I have no idea how to change my style of play to include other people which pretty much means all I do is run around doing quests and leveling alone. I've had a couple of Co-Workers who last summer, insisted on running me through a few instances so I could get some better gear in preparation for hitting 40 on Iva (which I am about a level and a half from now finally haha) but that's about it.

Which is fine - most of the time I like to be alone, WoW is totally my way of winding down after a rough day at work. But sometimes I read posts in the various WoW communities and I kind of miss playing with others like I did when I still played FFXI. I feel like I am missing something by having a vanity guild, and that I am missing out on fun and drama and something just... essential .. and that when/if I ever want to raid or do anything but grind out levels, that I will have absolutely NO CLUE what I am doing.

I am probably a pretty suck player, which is fine since I solo so much. My UI is probably crap. My Addons are probably a hoot.... But I think it would be fun to learn and expand because I do love WoW.

I am very much a casual player. I have a boyfriend who never uses his computer unless it is to check email, and I have a strange work schedule (and a lot of hours) so I've always been pretty much afraid to join a guild because my few friends who DO play, tend to want someone who has a lot of time to commit to various things, which I don't have. While I do log on pretty much every day, skipping a few here and there, it is at different times and I can't often commit to doing things as a group for lengthy periods.

I guess what I am looking for is either... a fairly active SOCIAL guild that is more focused on friendship, helping each other out etc on Feathermoon (US) where my main is, or a group of people who'd like to start out newbies together for similar on whatever Server and Faction. Or both! I think it would be fun to gather a group of strangers together to start out as newbs, build a guild and grow together from the ground up!
Science fiction scholars, do you have a great article about SF from around the world? Non-US authors, do you have a fantastic SF story or poem you'd like to share?

World Literature Today is publishing a special science fiction issue in May 2010. This is a great opportunity to help introduce the literary reader to our genre! Now in its ninth decade of publication, WLT has been recognized by the Nobel Prize committee as one of the "best edited and most informative literary publications" in the world, and was recently called "an excellent source of writings from around the globe by authors who write as if their lives depend on it" (Utne Reader). WLT has received a dozen national publishing awards in the past ten years.

I may not have liked the book but I still need to read the sequel to experience the happy ending (stupid cliff hanger first book with the unhappy ending). Borders was all out. But they did have a parody book called "The Vampire Just Isn't That Into You." For us girls who are dating vampires and just don't get it when they're losing interest and we deserve better? Or something like that (I'll never know since I didn't buy it).

December 28th, 2009

I finished "Zen and the Art of Vampires" and was disappointed on a few levels. Mostly because it was a cliff hanger ending and you have to read "Crouching Vampire, Hidden Fang" to know how it turns out. Thanks a lot. I don't know if I'll have time to hit a book store before my flight tomorrow or if they will even have this book.

Mostly I was disappointed because it was not in fact a vampire romance. It was a super natural mystery/action/thriller with two bouts of hot sex with one vampire and really awkward sex with another. While two vampires seducing this woman is probably supposed to be enticing, I really don't find a woman engaging in casual sex with men (or undead men as the case may be) she doesn't know to be something I want to read about. I am surrounded in real life by a sub-culture that regularly endorses casual sex, apparently sometimes with people they hardly know. Heck, I'm pretty sure that this is the standard in normal people's culture as well. So much so that I feel like a freak (and am sometimes regarded as one) because I don't engage in any sort of casual sex.

So if I pick up a romance novel it is with the intention of escaping the everyone-sleeps-with-everyone real world I don't fit into and wanting to read about the dream life where people fall in love and have sex only after realizing they want to be together for the rest of their natural (or unnatural, as the case may be with Vampires) lives. I feel very cheated having picked up what I thought was a romance novel and being treated instead to a story about a woman who can't keep her dress on just because a naked vampire shows up un-invited in her hotel room. He didn't even bother to wine and dine her first. Just showed up naked, spouting his devotion. Really? I mean, REALLY? No thank you.
I worship/pamper my cat. Without Vader I am a priestess without a god.

PUG BINGO!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I found these mentioned these on WoW.com and they got it from a forum post.

Three PUG bingo cards! )

So.... Actually... I've had an EXCELLENT time in mostly all of my PUGs.

-I've geared myself pretty well, when otherwise I wouldn't have a chance of getting into a heroic group (80 Mage with BAD BAD gear to begin with).
-I've had success at getting better gear for my off spec Holy Pally. (And helped my darling husband with his Pally Off Spec-Ret get gear, too.)
-Met some pretty nice off realm people.

Yeah... I've had to tell people "Hey, I don't tell you how to play your char. Please, don't tell me how to play mine." twice. It didn't bother me, as it;s a common oocurance on ALL realms I play on. So why get butt hurt?

Yeah... I've had players do stupid things. "Hey, you pull, you tank. Don't want to tank, don't pull. Please wait for the healer." But ya' know... It's not *THAT* bad.

Over all, I LOVE THE TOOL. I'm very happy with it.
I got a World of Warcraft game time card for Christmas from my mother in law.

It was a very nice gesture, though I already pay each moth to play.  It feels a little useless, even though I know I can hold onto it for lean months when saving $15 for two months would be handy, and I know I could potentially give it to a friend who wants to try out the game (though all my friends who have picked WoW up for a bit get bored and move on, or the one who likes it plays for a half hour every four-six days and has fallen into the "how come you're always on your 80" syndrome).

SO...  I was wondering if there are any other imaginative things to do with the card I may not have thought of. I'm probably going to let it sit until needed, but just like looking up your class and thinking up every conceivable use for your class abilities, I wanted to know any ideas to use a gift card I hadn't thought of. Thanks!

EDIT:  I already have a Zhevra mount, but that's still an idea for an alt.

Transmute Mastery

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Hello,

So, It's been roughly 6 weeks since I've had a transmute proc. I realise it's an RNG, but that seems very excessive to me, should I wait, or should I contact a GM and see if I am bugged? Has anyone else had this problem? I used to proc every few days or so.

Edit // Thank you all for your responses! After testing it for a few hours and not receiving any procs I opened a GM ticket. I was told that the game was showing that I did not have Transmute Mastery learned, even though I did, and he 'reset' it for me, the moment he did, I started proccing again. Heh, anyways, Thank you!!

Hello All

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Hi all,

I know I am just mimicking the previous posters of “I’m a noob and I have never played WoW before”.. but I haven’t. I played a little FFXI but that’s about it.

I do have a few questions though;

1.       I chose a Dark Elf Hunter, I did the few quest in my area and learned a tracking ability, now what?

2.       Is there a place where people hang out so that I can meet people? I did a say when I first entered and no one really wanted to chat or introduce me to WoW so I just kind of killed things and tried to figure things out (I lost a lot of money selling and buying back items I sold on accident). I like the social aspects of MMORPG so I am looking for people to hang out with and make friends.

3.       Is Money hard to come buy? In FFXI there was an Action House that acted as income, does this have a sort of Action House?

4.       Is their group battles and XP parties. So far I have hit level 4 just doing quest and killing things in the forest (mostly bores and tigers).

5.       Can you switch jobs, and how so? Which job do you all think would be good for me, I like to do damage, but I also like support, when I played FFXI I was a Ranger, Summoner, and Bard.

6.       Now that the game is 4+ years old, is it still worth it?

Also is there any type of etiquette that I need to be aware of, such as not attacking the same beast at the same time?

Thanks in advance for the advise.

I shopped so much today that the muscles in my legs are all inflamed. I think I started walking the streets of Hollywood Blvd. at 11am and finished my shopping on Melrose at 6pm. I did stop once for lunch for about 15 minutes. So I walked almost non-stop for 7 hours straight.

I hit the flagship store of Frederick's of Hollywood and picked up these yummy items...

Bra with rhinestones...

Matching garter belt with rhinestones...

I need to come up with a way to turn this matching rhinestone and lace set into a costume (layering things over and under it and such). Because I think lingerie just feels way to good to limit to just wearing at home. If something makes me feel this pretty then I want to share it!

The Hot Topic in Hollywood has WAY more New Moon merchandise than any Hot Topic in Seattle. I picked up a sparkly shade of gray/silver eye shadow because apparently there is a New Moon line of make-up and fragrances (but you would never know unless you leave Seattle).

I picked up a dead sexy stunning gown at Foreplay, my favorite stripper store. It is a clingy fabric with PVC accents in a place you have never seen before on a gown. A head turner for sure. Maybe I'll wear it to the Vampire Ball next year. Or maybe just to the Merc one night because it's too gorgeous and unusual to just sit in my closet.

I picked up a few other accessories. But I was way more conservative in my spending than I have been in my previous annual shopping trips to Hollywood because I'm just not clubbing all that much anymore these days. And my closet is still overflowing with sexy goth and go-go outfits that have only been worn once or twice.
Last week, I went to see the dentist - something that causes me unnecessary grief - and got a long-overdue checkup. The dental hygienist was very thoughtful and kind, and the dentist acted appropriately horrified when I told her about why I was nervous. "That's awful," she said. "Dentistry has come a long way since then," she promised. And it seems she was right.

Nonetheless, tomorrow morning I need to go back for a "very small" filling, and it's tying my stomach up in knots. I'm sure everything will turn out okay. The worst part will be the damned needle and the pressure from the lidocaine under the skin. They're not sadists. They're in this business because they like taking care of people's teeth. Still.

Oh, and I chomped the living hell out of my tongue tonight. Which will be awesome tomorrow morning. *sigh*

Chris

UPDATE: As expected, the hygienist and dentist were kind and professional. They were also quicker than I had expected, and it was nice to watch Mythbusters during the procedure. Unfortunately, they finished before the Rocket Car™ launched, so I don't know if it worked!

I've discovered that nitrous doesn't seem to do anything, though the dentist told me that it relaxes people - because I felt normal, I must have been pretty anxious going in! The cleaning last week was actually much more painful: Those x-ray tabs hurt the mouth! When the lidocaine wears off, I fully expect to be sore, but for now, all's well. See, dental visits can be good.

Hello All. I am interested in playing WoW, but I really don't know where to begin. I'll explain myself.

Not too long ago I bought the 14-day trial of the game, and I'm going to install it tomorrow. However, the biggest question I'm sure most new WoW players ask themselves is: "Which class should I be?" So...which class should I be? I did one of those lame quizzes on another phishing site (please don't ask, I still have that "dirty feeling"), and it suggested I play as a Rogue. From what my WoW friends told me, a large percentage of people play as Rogues anyway. I was hoping that lame quiz would suggest a class that is rarely played.

Just so you all know, I am not an MMORPG noob. I played MapleStory for quite a while, and I want to play something more grown-up.

So...since my question is related to character class, please help me with your suggestions based upon my preferences.
1) I want to be a class that can level quickly;
2) I want to be able to take a beating and not die from a scratch, but I don't want to be a "tank" or a "damage dealer" exlusively;
3) I want to be unique, but I'll pick something more generalized if that class honors the first two criteria.

What do you all suggest? Should I be a Rogue, or something different. If I really like this trial I'll probably play this game on a regular basis if/when I get a new laptop. Thank you for your time and help.

~~Nick

I have a real quick request here: can anyone throw out some names of some PvE servers with reasonably high/active Horde populations? I know PvE server pops can skew pretty heavily toward Alliance, and I could probably find the info I want slogging through census site data, but if anyone can offer up some suggestions off the top of their head I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Does anyone know how to turn off the fog effect in ICC? I used two commands that gets rid of shadows and the "mist" at Hrogthar's landing but it didn't do anything for the fog inside ICC. It kills my FPS a lot and I've been looking for ways to get it disabled. I have all my settings at minimum with a lot of options turned off. Help appreciated.

Moderation Time

Hello everyone! It's your friendly neighborhood moderator, [info]neuroxin, here and I'd like to have a short talk with all of you.

The new LFG system has certainly created opportunity for lots of good and bad group experience posts! It has been pointed out to me that many of our posts lately have been angry rants about bad players. These are unfortunately often fraught with generalizations about classes and class roles and those that play them. Quite frequently of late I've been contacted personally about particular posts and comments.

I'd like to remind everyone about our community rules, particularly Rule 4, and about one of our sister communities, [info]dear_gnome. This is not to suggest that you shouldn't continue posting about your LFG experiences here, not by any means. But if your post seems to appropriately begin with "Dear [Generalized Player Group] then it's likely to belong more appropriately on [info]dear_gnome. Please just be more mindful of your tone and to whom you're directing your rant. Lately several posts have fallen into the category of trolls and flamebait these posts are being removed and will continue to be.

Lastly, I'd like to remind everyone that [info]worldofwarcraft moderation needs your help in identifying problem posts and comments. My contact information is on the community userinfo page so I'd like it if everyone felt free not to hesitate in contacting me.

Thanks!
